On April 17-18, 2007 more than 500 venture capitalists gathered to hear from leading venture capitalists, technology industry thought leaders, institutional investors and several respected policymakers. It was the first time in a decade that the meeting was held in our Nation’s Capitol and based on member feedback, the meeting was a great success.

During the first day, special sessions were held for venture firm CFOs and In-House Counsels, corporate venture capitalists, young venture capitalists, and investors who specialize in clean technology, security, new media and life sciences. All attendees were invited to hear Charles Giancarlo, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer, at Cisco Systems, Inc. discuss how communication technology will evolve in the future and impact our daily lives. On the evening of the 17th, the program adjourned with a special dinner that featured a fascinating discussion between two of the most well respected experts on global health issues, Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and Tadataka Yamada, M.D., President of the Global Health Program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, moderated by Robert Bazell, NBC News' Chief Science and Health Correspondent. For those who still had the energy, the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association hosted a lovely Rhythm and Blooms reception at the Kennedy Center’s Rooftop Terrace.

The second day of the conference featured several dynamic speakers and topical panel discussions. Incorporating NVCA’s MAGNET Initiative, Dean Kaman, Inventor, Successful Entrepreneur, and Founder of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) enlightened the audience about the creative ways his organization is inspiring young entrepreneurs. Next, Diana Frazier of FLAG led a very interesting discussion among several prominent institutional investors about their strategies for the coming years. Stu Rothberg and Charlie Cook, two well respected political analysts walked the audience through the possible outcomes and driving forces of the 2008 Presidential election.

The two afternoon panels kept in line with our conference theme, Globalization of Innovation, featuring investors from several key regions around the world, including China, India, Israel, Europe and Japan and experts on the Global Capital Markets. George Bodenheimer, CEO of ESPN closed the program with his story and lessons learned from building ESPN from a risky start-up to a thriving fast-growing business at the crossroads of journalism, pop-culture, technology and sports.
